Established in 1980, Corofin United FC has recently purchased land and developed two playing pitches, plus a training pitch at Myles Park in the village. This is the first phase of a five-year plan which also includes the development of a clubhouse and all-weather playing facilities. In addition to the usual races, there will also be an auction, including a signed T-shirt belonging to Pádraig Harrington, and a host of signed jerseys that include soccer greats Eric Cantona and Ronaldo, an Irish soccer jersey signed by a number of the players plus manager Giovanni Trapattoni, a Connacht Rugby jersey, a Galway football jersey, and a Wexford football jersey signed by Mattie Forde.

With the winter biting at their heels when they take to the field in O’Connor Park in Tullamore on Sunday, Carnacon go searching for their third All Ireland senior club championship crown and their second on the trot. Some things in life are inevitable such as death and taxes, but so it seems are Carnacon at the business end of the club championship season. It seems like a lifetime ago when another Mayo club was able to escape their clutches and try and make a steal into Connacht and beyond.

Following on from Carnacon’s success in last weekend’s senior club final, Mayo are looking to pick up their second All Ireland club title in the space of seven days in the ladies’ game. This time it will be the pride of Mayo who will be looking to take home the honours when Knockmore take on Clare and Munster champions Kilmichil in Tuam Stadium at 2pm tomorrow (Saturday November 29). The Knockmore ladies who claimed their first adult county championship in over 30 years this year when they defeated Westport in the final, have had some tough battles along the way to the this stage, where 60 minutes stand between them and destiny. The Mayo championship saw them see off Tourmakeady and St Brigids before the final against Westport, a game that saw them turn around a half time deficit to claim the championship.

For the sixth time in five years the Mayo senior ladies will set out on the road towards league and championship action with a new manager at the helm. Following in the footsteps of Michael Ryder, Frank Browne, and Charlie Lambert in the last few years is Tuam native Kevin Reidy. Even with the upheaval in management over the last two years the Mayo players have managed to pull through and claim two Connacht titles, a national league title, and make it to an All Ireland final. So Reidy knows that he has the talent at his disposal to make a serious challenge for honours this year.

For the second in row Mayo started off the National League with a defeat at the hands of Derry, this time in James Stephen’s Park last Sunday. While both sides hit 10 scores the decisive score of the game came from Derry debutant James Kielt 45 minutes into the contest, who got on the end of move that came about as Tom Cunniffe lost possession trying to break out of defence.

While the glamour tie of Sunday afternoon will be the all Mayo clash in the Connacht Colleges A final, the B final which throws in at 1.30pm will have plenty of Mayo interest also with St Louis, Kiltimagh, attempting to keep the Mayo stranglehold on the title. Standing in their way is Galway outfit ST Paul’s, Oughterard, who have surprised many this year seeing off what would be considered more vaunted opponents in the shape of St Attracta’s, Tubbercurry, St Nathy’s, Ballaghaderreen, and Summerhill Sligo en route to the final. The St Louis side are managed by former Mayo star Maurice Sheridan and former Ballintubber player Tony Duffy, the duo have guided them to wins over Ballyhaunis Community School, Carrick-on-Shannon, and last week Rice College, and will be hoping to ensure a clean sweep for Mayo on Sunday.

McHale Park will get its first airing this season on Sunday when the All Ireland champions Tyrone come to town for the final round of the Allianz National Football League. Mayo will be looking to pick up where they left off against Galway in Tuam Stadium a fortnight ago, where a stunning second half performance saw John O’Mahony’s side overturn a six point half time deficit to squeeze past Galway by a single point and secure a one point win. The win leaves O’Mahony’s side in fourth place in the division one table on six points, equal on points with Mickey Harte’s side. A draw on Sunday would ensure both sides’ status in division one for next season, but a defeat coupled with a high scoring win by Dublin over an already relegated Westmeath and a win by Donegal over Derry could drag either side back into the bottom two of a very tight division one table.

A couple of months into his reign as manager of the Mayo ladies’ senior side, Tuam native Kevin Reidy is looking forward to his side’s National League division one final against Cork on Saturday May 9. “I’m looking forward to the final, it was a very tough game last Sunday against a very physical Laois side.” Reidy’s ladies’ side came out on the right side of a 3-10 to 0-13 win in Aghamore thanks in no small part to a player of the game display from Kilmaine sharp shooter Emma Mullin. She hit 3-4 for Mayo from play, while Cora Staunton landed five points on the day, four of them coming from frees as she was shackled by the Laois defence.

Galway ladies celebrated a successful weekend with both the seniors and juniors recording victories over Mayo to claim provincial titles.
